Will you used to be perhaps the best science writer on Medium, what happened. Now you write opinion pieces like this one sans science and focused on the same few whipping horses.
As far as this piece goes, it is really an attack on carbon markets, not on AI. If those markets work the way they are supposed to work, then producing a unit of CO2 and also paying for 1 unit of CO2 is supposed to really be the same as having not produced anything. Of course you cannot get to Net zero with such an approach, but if you have not noticed, we are not close to net zero, so such an approach on its face seems quite sensible.
Now perhaps you are telling us that these markets are a sham, and they don't really offset what they claim (because of double counting or other issue).
Fine. That would be news I would be interested in reading. But the news you have posted here is that these AI companies are "hiding" their production using carbon-credits. I think that is a disingenuous framing, only a person deep under a rock does not understand that nearly every company making claims about net-zero are using carbon credits as part of their story. No news here, no hiding here.
Please do write about carbon markets if they are a sham. But even better, please write about some science, like the good old days!
