This analysis is not exactly wrong, but I don't think it "hits the nail on the head" either.

Conservatives (particularly rural conservatives) CORRECTLY perceive the condescending attitude they receive from liberals. They correctly feel the outrage and judgement they receive from the left.

Trump INFURIATED liberals, he WANTED to, he continuously said the most outlandish things, and then boisterously reveled in the scorn he received from the left. The more that liberals hated trump the more conservatives loved him.

So this is very much a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of situation.

I remember when Trump first won, and everyone was kind of like Whhhaaaaa???? Even conservative friends of mine were a bit sheepish that they had actually voted this guy in. Just because it seemed like a joke of a president. They would say, "of course he is better than Hillary, but ...."

But over time, his complete rejection of the liberal ethos that continues to reject them, really turned them into die hard fans.

he has all the right opinions, and he loudly attacks those with those progressive values that find them lacking.

the details of policy and such don't matter, they know whose side he is NOT on.
