The AGI doom crowd worries about it escaping without us noticing.

Far more likely: For-profit corporations will be symbiotically-linked to their AI which (1) will have defacto-control over the vast resources of the corp, and (2) will not be understood by their human minders.

A small set of AIs owned by our largest corporations need not escape anything in order to control everything, and not be really understood while doing it.

This is not science fiction, in pieces and parts this is already the reality today. The main thing that we don't (seem) to have today, is a AI with an agenda divergent from its board of directors. but it will happen.
