``Let them eat cake!’’

its not gig-job vs. 1950s-job.

The correct comparison is gig-job vs. NO-job.

Uber has massively spiked the number of paid trips over the old taxi days… . it did much more job creation than job destruction — so there is more total paid work being done. Are they as good as the old-time jobs. No.

But your argument is telling them to “eat cake” when they don’t have any bread! (heh that is a double metaphor :-)

There is a problem automation and employment, and it is only going to get worse — I agree with this. But tying it to the gig economy is misdiagnosing the cause, and steering us away from a very partial RELIEF from the problem.

The comparison you want us to make is between gig-job and old-school job, but this is not the choice that would exist w/o gig jobs. it is mostly between gig-job and NO-job.

And when you look at the comparison that way, then a gig job does look so bad. I predict as Amazon automates their warehouse, and Uber automates their cars, people will realize they really really wish they still had those ``shitty’’ jobs to complain about.
