IS ART INCOMPATIBLE WITH SCIENCE?

In a way similar to religion, it claims to offer a means of understanding truths about our world. Since there is no guarantee the truths it reveals will be compatible with truths as revealed by science must we reject it, or reject science?

I think not. I agree with your observation that much (likely) misinformation stems from religious belief. This is quite accurate. And certain religiously derived beliefs (like the 6,000 year old earth) are truely incompatible with science.

Still I would like to define a broader category, and argue that, taken as a whole, this broader category is not incompatible with Science even if specific beliefs derived from it, are incompatible.

The search for meaning and understanding via non-empiric means. Both art and religion fit into the broad category, as do many other forms of striving which sometimes even presage empirical inquiry.

I don't think our situation is improved if we try to pick a single way to frame all questions. That said, we do have pragmatic reason to select Science as the best way to answer certain categories of question. Indeed, we can even use science itself to assess it present ability to address a given question.

I think this gives us the benefit you seek, without over-reach: the ability to push Science as the most auspicious approach to for answering particular questions.
