interesting thought experiment!

I would say to aspects should be considered:

when comparing now to hundreds of years ago most were really focused for much of their day on not dying. (e. g. starving or such) so in that way I think we are more relaxed to day generally which is conducive to happiness (with some important caveats).

Also when comparing activities I think it is important to notice the details of which aspects the modern version replaces in the original. Take the telephone or face time for example:

These do replace face 2 face communication well enough that folks are pretty happy to have a one hour call with their lover rather than make a 1 hour trek to see them. Face 2 face is still better, but the phone generates quite a bit of happiness too. and it is because many of the details are preserved.

now playing a video game vs. skiing a moutain do not feel nearly the same.

but it one really could simulate the feeling (and exhasustion of skiing) by doing it in a virtual way, I think it would start to replace the real thing. not in all cases, but in order to save yourself the time of travelling to spot perhaps it would be done.

Perhaps like reading a kindle book vs a real book. Yes the real book is classier, but for convenience we often turn to the kindle book since 90%+ of the experience is preserved.

Once 90%+ of the experience of spending a day with your kids in the alps is replace with with a simulation its hard to say how many people will drag their ass to france with the family.

but I think your larger point holds:

We are human animals in a human body and the pursuits that interest us remain constant over the millennia even if the best way to execute them shifts over time.

fun topic!
