I think he is saying the opposite. he is saying that both lived in a time when their behavior raised no alarm bells. only to find that societies norms chanced so quickly that their past behavior presently judged is quite different from their past behavior would have been judged at the time.

Isn't this true in both cases. the facts about Russell have not changed over time... culture itself has.
