I would say that the core of this shift, is a shift towards automation, outsourcing, and ascendancy of non-physical products that can be replicated infinitely (like software). All of these effects mean we need fewer total workers.

This effect is only going to get worse. Much worse. So we will need a new post-capital way to organize society in order to fix it. (I am generally pro-capitalism, but the system will not serve us as more money is generated by fewer and fewer people)
