By nearly all measures the purchasing power of the median American increased swiftly from 1800 to 2000. (e.g. how many people could one person feed. or how many cars could they buy, etc.)

The inequality dropped from all during the 1900s until about 1980 or so, before that started reversing.

so there was less and less poor, at least for a while.
