A negotiated peace where the non-Russian part of Ukraine is not part of the EU or NATO, but is heavily motivated to align closely with both is stopping Russia. Ukraine will be HEAVILY investing in making further adventure very hard for Russia. So will Poland and others.

That is a pretty good fire-break for Russia.

Or we can spend the better part of a trillion dollars to just bludgeon Russia for many years to try break them so they cannot attack others. That will eventually work of course, but you know its an expensive process with a lot of body bags.

The west stuck its dick into the whole situation by saying to Russia that one of its key trio (Ukraine) was gonna be part of NATO. not our best move ....
